Our Story: The History of Benchmark Concrete Raising

At Benchmark Concrete Raising, our foundation is built on family values, determination, and a commitment to serving the Twin Cities community with trusted concrete repair solutions.

From Family Business to Concrete Solutions

Back in 2009, Amanda Retzer opened an in-home childcare business so she could be present with her children while still supporting her family. Running the daycare gave her flexibility, but it also taught her valuable lessons in hard work, clear communication, and building trust with clients—principles that would later shape her next venture.

By 2023, as her children entered school full-time, Amanda began exploring a new career path. She noticed a growing problem in her Minneapolis–St. Paul neighborhood: sinking, uneven, and unsafe concrete. Driveways, sidewalks, patios, and garage aprons were shifting, and homeowners had very few reliable options to fix them.

Determined to provide a better, longer-lasting alternative to mudjacking, Amanda founded Retzer Concrete Leveling. Using polyurethane concrete raising, her company delivered a fast, clean, and eco-friendly solution that quickly earned a reputation across the Twin Cities for quality workmanship and customer care.

The Transition to Benchmark Concrete Raising

By 2025, Retzer Concrete Leveling had grown beyond a one-woman operation. Amanda partnered with Ryan Herrmann and Shaun Johnson, who brought extensive knowledge, resources, and of combined experience in concrete repair and operations. Together, they transitioned the business into Benchmark Concrete Raising, expanding services across Minneapolis, St. Paul, Mankato, Forest Lake, and surrounding suburbs.

This partnership was more than just a business move—it was the perfect blend of Amanda’s hands-on experience with Ryan and Shaun’s technical and operational expertise. The collaboration allowed Benchmark Concrete Raising to grow while staying true to the same high standards of transparency, reliability, and customer-first service that Amanda started with.

Even after the transition, Amanda remained actively involved, ensuring that the company’s values of trust, communication, and long-lasting results remained at the core of everything Benchmark does.

Frequently Asked Questions – Concrete Raising in the Twin Cities

Q1: What is polyurethane concrete raising?
Polyurethane concrete raising, also called “polyjacking,” lifts and levels sunken concrete by injecting expanding foam beneath the slab. It’s faster, cleaner, and longer-lasting than mudjacking.

Q2: Is concrete leveling better than replacement?
Yes. Concrete leveling costs far less than replacement, takes hours instead of days, and avoids tearing out good concrete.

Q3: How long does polyurethane concrete raising last?
Most projects last 10–15+ years, making it a cost-effective, durable solution for homeowners, HOAs, and businesses.

Q4: Does Benchmark serve commercial properties and HOAs?
Absolutely. We work with homeowners, HOAs, and businesses across Minneapolis, St. Paul, and surrounding suburbs to restore sidewalks, driveways, patios, and garage aprons.
